Innovation or Disruption: The Future of Certification (Part 1)

A few decades after the creation of many of the world’s most credible and successful sustainability certification schemes, we see that Planet Earth’s condition is still in decline. The sheer scale of the sustainability challenges we face raises the question: Is certification doing enough? And how can certification bodies and their stakeholders adapt to achieve real scale, lasting change and truly transformative impacts they’re after? Layer onto these questions new challenges to certification in general – such as companies’ own internal standards, common preferences to ‘cherry pick’ topics to champion while ignoring important material issues, and the evolution of a number of tools allowing new levels of transparency in supply chains – and the picture gets very complicated very quickly. In response to this, some certification bodies have realized the need to innovate is too great to delay any longer. Leading change, championing change, explaining and implementing change – all of these are massive steps that do not come easy to established certification schemes. And there is no simple one answer for everyone. This discussion session brings together certification leaders across different categories so they can share how they are each innovating in their respective fields.
