Earthster Debuts Open Source LCA Tool Piloted by Walmart & Seventh Generation
Join Earthster, Walmart and Seventh Generation as they unveil the next generation of life cycle analysis software - the open-source Earthster 2 Turbo LCA platform.
This open-source software-as-a-service tool is designed to provide companies with actionable analysis on the lifecycle of their products and services and will be piloted by Wal-Mart, Seventh Generation and Tetra Pak. Hear from Jeff Rice of Wal-Mart and Dave Rapaport of Seventh Generation as they describe WHY they are founding members of the platform and are piloting Earthster 2 Turbo throughout their supply chains.
TRANSPARENCY FOR SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT
“ Earthster represents an emerging generation of information systems that uses the metrics of life cycle assessment (LCA) to track sustainability impacts throughout a given product's supply chain. This metric gives companies the tool they need to manage - and reduce - eco-impacts and assess a product’s sustainability footprint from cradle-to-cradle in the new competitive arena."
-Daniel Goleman, author of Ecological Intelligence
Earthster is collaborating with a mix of companies, NGOs, and government agencies to co-develop the Earthster 2.0 Turbo (E2T), an open source flexible platform that accommodates integration of a growing set of standards, metrics and impact assessment methods. We heard from Walmart, Seventh Generation, EPA Climate Leaders today who are collaborating with Earthster along with Tetra Pak, Good Guide, and Pre Consultants .
We invite additional members now to join us in piloting a new open source tool and LCA resources designed for companies to accelerate sustainable production, for government agencies to implement sustainable procurement initiatives, and for NGOs and sustainability and LCA experts to share insight and best practices. In order to ensure the most positive and productive user experience, we are inviting participation for up to 6 more Founding Members and up to 30 additional Associate Members. Training is provided for all members. Pilot work will commence in Q1 2011.
Participants on the webcast highlighted three main benefits for becoming an Earthster member.
- Low-Cost Solution for Supply Chain Management. E2T works to ensure that sustainability information flows in the most efficient ways, at the lowest possible costs, for all participants throughout the supply chain.
- Ability to quickly understand product sustainability footprints. E2T uses best available LCA information to guide information gathering from suppliers on the 20% percent of inputs that typically account for 80% of impacts, with fast results, tubotax like features, and high impact visualizations.
- Sustainability Data Commons. Member support is needed to create a free data commons to accelerate product sustainability, Member support will also enable Earthster to introduce a free product sustainability tool in the Fall of 2011 and to build a multi-stakeholder movement working to steer a product and supply chain transition to sustainability so that our collective handprints -- our ability to make a positive difference -- is greater then our cumulative sustainability footprints.
