Inspiring Innovation: Tackling a Carbon Neutral Expedition to Antarctica

In January 2011, Ed Viesturs, America’s leading high altitude mountaineer, assisted in guiding a team of eight climbers on a carbon-neutral expedition to Vinson Massif (Mt. Vinson). Vinson Massif is the highest mountain in Antarctica, (16,067 ft) and is located 750 miles from the South Pole. It is one of the Seven Summits, the highest peaks of the seven continents. In his 27 years of climbing, Ed has witnessed first-hand the true impact of climate change on the environment. His ambition to discover the effect of a high-altitude expedition led him to his work at Source 44 as their head spokesperson. Ed explains how he and his team worked to minimize the environmental impact of this expedition, why this trip was different and how this expedition will serve as a baseline for future climbs.
