Evaluating the Chemicals in Your Products: Comparing and Contrasting Leading Tools

There are a number of tools available and used to evaluate the safety of chemicals and materials used in consumer products. Some of the tools look at authoritative lists to determine whether a chemical is appropriate for use in a given product, others assess the hazard profile of the chemical or material and some go a step further to evaluate exposure to a chemical or materials and potential risk to people or the environment. During this session, we will investigate a host of tools commonly used by large retailers and brands, including but not limited to US EPA’s DfE, GreenScreen, GreenSuite, GreenWERCS, SciVera, and GoodGuide. Participants in this workshop will walk away with a deeper understanding of the suite of available tools; their scope; and the type of questions they should be asking of their tool suppliers moving forward to help manage chemicals and risk.  In addition to chemical hazard, exposure and risk capabilities, participants will better understand software usability, integration with other business systems, and other factors to consider when deciding what framework or software solution best meet a company’s needsThe session will include case studies of the results these tools generate when evaluating chemicals commonly used is consumer products.  Reports prepared by the authors on this subject will be available at the session.
