Noelle Selin, Professor of engineering systems and atmospheric chemistry at MIT, and colleagues compared the health benefits to the economic costs of three climate policies: a clean-energy standard, a transportation policy, and a cap-and-trade program. They found that savings from health benefits dwarf the estimated $14 billion cost of a cap-and-trade program.

Ambri, a company started in an MIT laboratory with Professor Donald Sadoway and David Bradwell MNG '06 PhD '11, is creating a simply designed, low-cost, liquid metal battery. After almost 10 years of research, Sadoway and Bradwell have a prototype to test. If it works, it will revolutionize the way the entire electric grid infrastructure works.

Sports radio isn’t a typical venue for impassioned debate on work-family issues and employment policy. But recently when Daniel Murphy took three days off from his job as second baseman for the New York Mets to be with his wife as she delivered their newborn son, it became just that. Two WFAN broadcasters — Mike Francesa and Boomer Esiason — took to the airwaves to rebuke Murphy’s absence.

On Sept. 30, 2014, supply chain education will take a major step into the digital age with the start of SCx, an on-line educational program developed by the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics (MIT CTL) for thousands of professionals across the globe. More than 9,000 individuals have already signed up for the first course, CTL.SC1x Supply Chain and Logistics Fundamentals, of the three-course program.

A series of crowdsourced competitions addressing specific aspects of climate change are open for voting in the fourth annual Climate CoLab. The contests rely on the power of collective intelligence, inviting and including ideas from all corners of the world to address global climate change. Visit climatecolab.org/plans can browse proposals, comment, and vote for the most promising proposals through Sept. 30. Winners will be announced in early October and will present at the Crowds and Climate conference, Nov. 5-7 at MIT. There will be a $10,000 grand prize.

The East 34th Street Public Ferry Terminal in Manhattan features an innovative lightweight triangulated column structure, a translucent tensile roof canopy, and the provision of micro-building services: distributed, versatile public amenities. The project is the first to integrate real-time environmental data into public waterfront architecture, using an interactive sensing system that registers the tidal flows under the surface of the East River.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) announced that Novozymes received 86 points out of 100 within their new category, the Chemical Industry Sector. Novozymes’ score is in the top 3 percentile of sustainability leaders in their sector. This year Novozymes achieved the highest score for the Chemical Industry sector in both the Climate Strategy and Environmental Policy categories.
