The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability — Designing for Abundance by William McDonough & Michael Braungart

William McDonough & Michael Braungart’s newest book, The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability — Designing for Abundance, is the long-awaited, equally-influential sequel to Cradle to Cradle. The Upcycle goes one step beyond the theory presented in Cradle to Cradle. Rather than continuously reusing materials in a closed-loop system as proposed in the first book, The Upcycle suggests that humans can create products and services with truly net positive impacts. This latest vision firmly rejects the idea of merely being ‘less bad’ and proposes that we focus more on creating a positive footprint for future generations. This may seem utopian at first, but multiple specific examples presented throughout the book make it clear that upcycling-inspired business models can be both realistic and profitable.
