The State of the Profession: IEMA Practitioners' Survey 2016

The 2016 Practitioners' Survey from the U.K.-based Institute of Environment Management & Assessment (IEMA) reveals that Environment and Sustainability Professionals are highly satisfied with their work.

82 percent of IEMA members reported they are satisfied with their career – the highest figure ever recorded for this group. It is also higher than the local national average: The U.K.’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that 77.6 percent of UK workers consider themselves satisfied at work.

Regarding pay, two-thirds of respondents have received a pay increase in the past 12 months, and median earnings for IEMA members (£38,180) remained ahead of those for full-time employees in the UK generally (£27,600) in 2015.

However, the poll also reveals that the profession's pay gap starts to appear between the ages of 25 and 29, and becomes increasingly pronounced. The gap has reached a 5-year high at 16.7 percent, compared with the U.K.'s economy-wide gap of 9.4 percent.
