Are All LCA Tools Created Equal? How Design Tool Choices Influence Decision-Making and Ultimate Impact

As companies look to incorporate life cycle evaluations into their design thinking and business practices the question of what tool to use in the design discussion often comes up. In this session, Tony Kingsbury shares results of a recent UC Berkeley study that evaluated many of the leading design tools on the market (GaBi, Simapro, Sustainable Minds, Compass and the Walmart Packaging Scorecard) to assess how different materials options that might be used in the design of common packaging formats (for example, a cup and a milk container) perform in a head to head comparison. The outcomes may surprise you. Learn how each tool handles various issues like reuse or recycled content, and how the carbon footprints can appear to differ widely for the same scenario depending on which tool is used. Once learning from the study is presented, Tony will open the discussion to further input and questions from participants.
