Taking the Pulse of a Growing Movement: Divestment and Fossil-free Campaigns

From universities, to religious communities, to prominent investment funds, fossil fuel divestment continues to gain traction among diverse groups around the world. And that is no surprise, given that 80 percent of global fossil fuel reserves need to remain unburned to avoid global warming more than two degrees above pre-industrial levels, the internationally accepted target for climate policy. As the number and variety of organizations pressing in favor of divestment grows, so do the number of approaches taken – drawing on moral philosophy, humanism, global security and health concerns, and financial pragmatism based on future business risk, among others. This objective of this session is to take the pulse of the divestment movement in all its flavors, weigh its pros and cons at the present moment, and tease out the optimal path forward, with an eye to COP21 and the opportunities it presents.
