The Next Wave: Investment Strategies for Plastic-Free Seas

Download full report from Plastics for Change

An estimated 150 million metric tons of plastic waste are in the ocean today, and every year an estimated 8 million metric tons more are being added. With oil prices at an all-time low, coupled with growing population levels and economic prosperity, plastic production and consumption are predicted to double over the coming decade. Without immediate intervention across all points of the pollution pathway, 250 million metric tons of plastic waste could be in the ocean in less than 10 years.

The issue of plastic waste in the ocean is complex, but solutions built on robust science and the concerted efforts of individuals, businesses, governments and civil society organizations are at hand. The Ocean Conservancy and Trash Free Seas Alliance’s new report, The Next Wave: Investment Strategies for Plastic Free Seas, examines some of the solutions and technologies currently available and looks forward to establishing a framework to generate greater collaboration and innovation toward long-term solutions.
